DOT MEDICAL EXAM TIPS

During your DOT Medical Examination:

Do not forget to take your prescribed medications the day of your exam. You will be asked to provide a urine sample. Please do not use the restroom prior to the beginning of the exam. Avoid energy drinks and/or non-prescription medication for at least 24 hours before your visit. Over the counter medication such as Ibuprofen (Advil), Naproxen (Aleve), decongestants or antihistamines may elevate your blood pressure. Get a good night sleep the night before and avoid excessive amounts of caffeine. If you have been diagnosed with any of the following conditions, below are helpful tips to help you prepare for the exam.

-         Diabetes: You must provide a recent Hemoglobin A1C blood test result (within 3 months), it is helpful if you provide a letter from your treating provider confirming you are not taking insulin, and have had no hypoglycemic episodes or diabetes complications such as a heart, kidney, eye or nerve damage. If you have any of the above listed diabetic complications, a clearance letter from your treating specialist (s) may be necessary. If you have diabetes, you should be evaluated by an eye professional at least yearly to prevent loss of vision that could impair your ability to drive.

-         Heart Condition: You should provide a clearance letter from your cardiologist, regarding your ability to safely drive a commercial vehicle that should include Ejection Fraction and any recent Exercise Tolerance or Heart Stress test results.

-         Sleep Apnea: A copy of your CPAP compliance report for the last 3 months is required. You can usually obtain this information through the company that provides you with the CPAP MACHINE. In some cases you may be able to obtain information from your pulmonologist or sleep medicine specialist. Health Services does NOT have the ability to read the chip that is inside the CPAP machine.

-         Hypertension (High Blood Pressure): You should have your blood pressure checked regularly and prior to your exam. A normal blood pressure is <140/<90, with the top number less than 140 and the bottom number less than 90. Your blood pressure should be less than140/90 to pass the exam.

-         Mental Health Disorders (e.g., anxiety, depression): You should provide a clearance letter from your treating provider addressing your ability to safely drive a commercial vehicle.
